Ten members of the same family were shot dead by armed individuals this morning at a home in eastern South AfricaThe Police reported this Friday.
In a statement, the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed “a mass shooting which claimed the lives of ten members of a family in pietermaritzburg”, capital of the province of KwaZulu-Natal.
“According to initial police reports, unknown armed men broke into a Pietermaritzburg home and ambushed the family. Seven women and three men were fatally injured. during the shooting,” the SAPS explained.
Police Minister, General Bheki Cele, plans to visit the scene of the crime today, which occurred in the suburb of imbalí.
The mayor of msunduzi (municipality including Pietermaritzburg), Mzimkhulu Thebhollaconfirmed the event and assured that two people managed to survive.
“I think they are the ones who might have the most information about what really happened because they were in the house when the incident occurred. However, so far, we know that three men entered the house and started shooting at random in connection with the reported rape case,” Thebholla told local media.
Its about second shooting in KwaZulu-Natal this week, after other four people were killed shot at a house in KwaMashu, north of the city of Durban, this Thursday.
Crime is a serious problem in South Africa, where police searched more than 6,420 murders and 9,510 rapes in just three months, from April 1 to June 30, 2022, as reported by Cele last August.
