90 percent progress in the Pocito, archaeological zone of Cholula

The project allows the rehabilitation of the access stairway to the Sanctuary of the Virgen de los Remedios

Edmundo Tlatehui, municipal president of San Andrés Cholula, and Manuel Villarruel, director of the INAH Puebla Center, announced yesterday the progress of the project to rescue the Pocito steps, in the archaeological zone of Cholula.

The project, they reported, allows the rehabilitation of the access stairway to the Sanctuary of the Virgen de los Remedios, erected in the 17th century on the pyramidal base, which was damaged by the 2017 earthquakes.

Arturo Balandrano, director of Cultural Heritage Sites and Monuments, pointed out that “the most important thing about an area and temple is that it must be preserved, despite suffering natural disasters such as tremors that damaged more than 621 temples and areas in Puebla.”

Tlatehui explained that the progress of the restoration is 90 percent, so this space will be delivered to the public shortly.

An adobe core associated with the filling of the fifth stage of the pyramidal basement was found; In addition, ceramic material corresponding to the remains of pre-Hispanic braziers was found.

A white stone cylindrical sculpture preform was discovered, 30 centimeters high, representing the god Tláloc, added archaeologist Sergio Suárez.
