The Virginia Police put into custody a six year old boy after he fired a firearm against a teacher in a primary school, leaving the teacher injured in critical state.
The minor would have shot the teacher when they were both in a classroom at the richneck college of the district of Newport Newsa fact that has been described as intentional by the Virginia Police Chief, steve drewin statements collected by the chain CNN.
“The individual is a 6 year old student. Right now he is in police custody (…) We have been in contact with our commonwealth solicitor and some other entities to help us get better services for this young man,” Drew explained at a press conference.
The teacher is in critical condition and his injuries are considered life-threatening, although there is “some improvement” according to the latest medical report, the Police stated that “this was not an accidental shooting”.
The boss of the Virginia Police assured that there was a altercation between teacher and studentthat he had the firearm, and that a single bullet was fired.
“We will do the research, there are questions that we will want to ask and find out. I want to know where that firearm came from, what was the situationDrew said.
The elementary school where the incident took place will remain closed the next school day, as announced by the superintendent of Newport News Public Schools, George Parker.
“I am shocked and heartbroken. We need to educate our children and we need to keep them safe.”Parker said during a press conference.
“We need the support of the community, the continued support, to make sure that guns are out of the reach of young people and today I am sounding like a broken record because I keep reiterating that: that we need to keep guns out of the hands of our youthadded Superintendent Parker.
One of the mothers of the educational community of richneck collegeJoselin Glover, told the newspaper The Virginian-Pilot that he received a text message from the school stating that one person had been shot and another was in custody.
“my heart stopped”, he expressed. “She was terrified, very nervous. She was just asking me if that person was my son.”
Carlos, his 9-year-old son, was at recess. But he said he and his classmates took cover in the back of a classroom as soon as they heard the shots.
“Almost the whole class was crying.”, Carlos told the aforementioned newspaper.
The police chief did not specifically address questions about whether authorities were in contact with the boy’s parents, but said members of the police department were handling that investigation.
The school shootings plague the United States, with recent tragedies such as the massacre last May of 19 children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texasat the hands of a 18 year old gunman.
