A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Pakistan and Afghanistan

A strong earthquake, which lasted at least 30 seconds, with a magnitude of 6.5, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), was felt on Tuesday night in Pakistan and Afghanistanwitnesses reported.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the northeast of Afghanistan near the city of Jorm, on the border with Pakistan and Tajikistan and at a depth of more than 187 kmaccording to the USGS.

“People ran out of their houses, many were reciting the Koran,” a correspondent for the news agency said. AFP in the city of Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

Other similar testimonies are also coming from Lahore and Afghanistan. According to the news agency Reuters, the shocks were felt even in the Indian capital, New Delhi. No damage or casualties have yet been reported.

The quake occurred in the Hindu Kush mountainous region, which is located at the confluence of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, For its part, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) specified.

According to Pakistan’s meteorological office, the quake was of magnitude 7.7.

On June 22, 2022, more than 1,000 people were killed and tens of thousands left homeless after a magnitude 5.9 earthquake – the deadliest to hit Afghanistan in nearly a quarter of a century – rocked the impoverished province of Paktika.

Afghanistan also suffered one of the largest earthquake disasters in 1998 in the north of the country, when two earthquakes of magnitude 5.9 and 6 in February killed some 4,000 people. A few months later, at the end of May, another earthquake of magnitude 7 shook the area again, causing some 5,000 deaths.
