Later, the mayday alert was downgraded to PAN – or “possible assistance required” – before the flight landed.

Airservices Australiathe government’s aviation regulator, said a situation like this “requires the attention of air traffic control.”

Qantas is among the safest airlines in the world and has not suffered a fatal accident for more than 70 years.

In January 2020, three Americans died in Australia after the tanker plane with which they were fighting the fires crashed.
