A woman accused of adultery received 100 lashes on Thursday in the conservative Indonesian province of Aceh, where Islamic law governs, while her alleged partner, a man who denied the accusations, was sentenced to 15 lashes.
Ivan Najjar Alavi, chief prosecutor of the region, He stated that the woman confessed to investigators having had sexual relations outside of marriage.
The judges had more difficulty in acknowledging the guilt of the man, who was head of the East Aceh Fisheries Agency, and also married, because he denied any wrongdoing, Alavi explained.
“During the trial, he did not admit anything and denied all the accusations. Therefore, the judges could not prove his guilt. Alavi told the press after the public punishment provided by Islamic law for these cases.

Aceh is the only region in Indonesia, a Muslim-majority country, to impose Islamic law, which punishes gambling, adultery, drinking alcohol and having homosexual relationships.
The man who denied the accusations was however given a lesser and alternative punishment of 15 lashes for “showing affection to a woman who is not his wife” after they were both surprised by local residents at a palm oil plantation in 2018. .
According to The Guardian newspaper, the man was initially sentenced to 30 lashes, but his successful appeal in Aceh’s highest sharia court reduced the sentence to 15.
The woman’s flogging stopped briefly because she couldn’t bear the pain, according to an Agence France-Presse reporter in the field.

A man convicted of having sex with a minor was also flogged 100 times. He would serve 75 months in prison after the flogging, prosecutors said.
Dozens of people watched, recorded and posted on social media footage of the floggings, a public spectacle criticized by rights groups but which regularly drew hundreds of viewers before the pandemic.
Flogging is common in Indonesia as a punishment for a variety of offences, and the Indonesian parliament is currently debating a reform of its criminal laws that could extend criminalization to sexual relations of all kinds outside of marriage, including homosexual relations.
