A large installation representing the atrocities committed by Russia in Ukraine prevented the passage of the Russian ambassador in Poland on Tuesday when trying to lay a wreath at a monument in Warsaw dedicated to fallen Soviet soldiers on the occasion of the Russian holiday of victory day.
The installation included hundreds of ukrainian flags waving blue and yellow flags and crosses that served as symbolic tombstones for the Ukrainians killed by the Russians during the war started by Moscow last year.
A pool of fake blood under the crosses underlined the message of the protest, created by Euromaidan-Warszawaa citizens’ initiative supporting Ukraine.
The organizer, Viktoria Pogrebniaksaid the installation was trying to respond to Russian propaganda and “show the real picture to the world.”
“They bomb us, kill us, rape us”Pogrebniak said. “They are killing us just because we are Ukrainians.”
The protesters, mostly Ukrainians but also Poles, prevented the access of the ambassador Sergei Andreev the monument, which is installed among graves of Red Army soldiers.
Those soldiers lost their lives fighting against the Nazi Germany during world war II. But many Poles also remember their perpetration of rape and other crimes, and resent subsequent ones in which their nation lived under Soviet rule.
With access blocked, Andreev left the wreath of red carnations in front of the hundreds of Ukrainian flags swaying in the wind while the loudspeakers they emitted sounds of bombs and anti-aircraft sirens.
andreevthat last year he was sprayed with a red liquid in the same place also on Victory Day, he promised to return later in the day. When she left, some protesters stayed in place in case she returned.
