The US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinkenheld this Saturday a telephone conversation with the South Korean foreign minister, park jinshortly before leaving for China for an important visit at a time when Seoul maintains diplomatic tensions with Beijing on account of his rapprochement with Washington.

During the call, various topics were discussed, from the bilateral relationship to the one between China and the US and South Korea and China, in addition to the North Korea’s weapons programas explained by the South Korean Foreign Ministry in a statement.

“Minister Blinken said he supports our efforts to develop a healthy and mature Korean-China cooperative relationship based on mutual respect, and plans to share with us details of the results of his upcoming visit to China as soon as possible.” , explain the text.

Seoul and Beijing experience a deterioration of tiess in recent months exacerbated by the recent words of the Chinese ambassador to South Korea, xinghaiming.

Xing warned Seoul against getting too close to Washington, saying that those who “bet” in favor of the US and against China “they will regret it”which earned him a summons to the South Korean Foreign Ministry, which issued him a “severe admonition” on account of some comments that Foreign Affairs described as “unreasonable and provocative”.

In recent years, ties between the two countries have been affected by the economic boycott that Beijing activated in 2016 against its neighbor in retaliation for the deployment on South Korean soil of a US anti-missile system, for the management of the pandemic or for the rise to power in Seoul of the conservative Yoon Suk-yeolwhich has strengthened ties with Washington and promised a more equal relationship with China.

For his part, Minister Park told Blinken today that he “supports US efforts to manage US-China relations responsibly even under difficult circumstances,” ahead of what will be the First visit by a US Secretary of State to the Asian giant in five years.

During the phone conversation, Park and Blinken also agreed to condemn North Korea’s “provocations” and that the denuclearization of Kim Jong-un’s regime would benefit the international community, including China.

Blinken said Friday that his next visit to China is aimed at open better communications “by addressing misperceptions and avoiding miscalculations.”

“Intense competition requires sustained diplomacy to ensure that competition does not turn into confrontation or conflict,” Blinken said.

“That is what the world expects from both the United States and China,” he added.

Blinken will hold talks on Sunday and Monday in Beijing.

The trip was rescheduled after the US canceled a planned visit by Blinken to Beijing in February after the US power said it detected, then shot down, a Chinese spy balloon.

The visit occurs after several months of tensions over the situation in Taiwan and China’s rapprochement with Russia in the face of the war in Ukraine.

This very week, Blinken accused China of having a spy center in Cuba at least since 2019, something that both Beijing and Havana have denied.
