At least one hundred people died and another 150 were injured by a fire during a wedding in a ballroom in Hamdaniya, a small town in the north of Iraqaccording to state media citing health sources.
The medical services of the province of Nineveh “listed 100 dead and more than 150 injured in the fire in a wedding hall in Hamdaniya“, noted the official Iraqi press agency INA, clarifying that it was a “preliminary” balance. The fire devastated a large assembly hall after it was ignited fireworks during the celebrationsaid the local civil defense, according to state media. A video recorded by an agency correspondent Reuters at the scene showed firefighters climbing through the charred remains of the building in search of survivors.
Preliminary information indicated that the building was made of highly flammable building materials, which contributed to its rapid collapse, state media said.
Iraqi federal authorities and those of the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan sent ambulances and medical teams to the scene, according to official statements.
