At least 15 dead from torrential rains in the Chinese city of Chongqing: there are 85,000 evacuees

At least 15 people lost their lives and another 4 remain missing for Torrential rains in the central Chinese city of chongqingreported Wednesday the state news agency xinhua.

The figure offered by the local authorities covers the victims from Monday, the day the heavy rainfall began, until this Wednesday at 07:00 local time (23:00 GMT on Tuesday).

The torrential rains, which began two days ago, focused on the mountainous municipality of Chongqing, with an area similar to countries such as the United Arab Emirates or the Czech Republic, and mainly affected the districts of Fengjie, Yunyang and Xiushan.

A total of eleven rivers in the city saw their flow increase to exceed the established safety limits.

According to the latest information, within Chongqing and the neighboring province of Sichuan, more than 460,000 people have been affected by the floodsamong which 85,000 residents were evacuated to safe sites as a precautionary measure.

Therefore, the competent bodies issued this Tuesday a orange alert for geological disasters triggered by rain in the area, as well as launching the lowest level of emergency response.

China has a four-tier color-coded weather warning system for geological disasters, with red being the most severe level, followed by orange, yellow and blue.

The torrential floods have already left dozens of deaths and more than a million homeless since the beginning of the summer in provinces such as those of Hunan, Sichuan, Jiangxi and Inner Mongolia.

Floods are a frequent phenomenon in China during the rainy season, which usually begins in June and lasts until August or September.

In 2021, flooding caused more than 300 dead and missing in China, especially in the central province of Henan, where unprecedented rain caused the Yellow River to overflow its banks, affecting more than 13 million people.

Natural disasters left in August 2022 some 41.8 million homeless and a total of 94 dead or missing in the Asian giant, where torrential rains, floods, landslides and typhoons caused direct damage worth 10,000 million dollars.
