The United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, held a telephone conversation on Monday with the Armenian Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinian, and urged Armenia and Azerbaijan to resolve the tensions between both countries with diplomacy.

“The secretary has underscored the continuing importance of the US-Armenian bilateral partnership and the US commitment to promoting a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous future for the South Caucasus.”explained in a statement the spokesman for the United States Department of State, Ned Price.

Likewise, on the escalation of tensions between the Armenian and Azerbaijani forces, Blinken has called on the parties to show “restraint and intensify the diplomatic commitment to find comprehensive solutions to all pending issues.”

A) Yes, Blinken reiterated in the statement the US “commitment” to hold Moscow and its supporters to account for the Kremlin’s “unprovoked and unjustified war” against Ukraine.

In this sense, the Government of Armenia announced on Monday that it has responded to Azerbaijan’s proposals and has called on the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to organize negotiations for the signing of a peace agreement.

In response, the spokeswoman for the Azeri Foreign Ministry, Leyla Abdullayeva, confirmed that Baku sent a “proposal with the basic principles for the establishment of relations between the two countries” a few days ago.

Armenia and Azerbaijan staged a confrontation in 2020 to take control of Nagorno Karabakh, a territory with a majority Armenian population that has been a focus of conflict since it decided to separate in 1988 from the Azerbaijan region integrated into the Soviet Union.

Hostilities between the two nations lasted for six weeks and left thousands dead. They finally ceased when the two countries reached a Russian-brokered ceasefire agreement that allowed Russian peacekeepers to settle in Nagorno-Karabakh for a period of five years.
