British intelligence estimates that Russian commanders have significantly toughened disciplinary punishments for their subordinateswho even end up locked in “dungeons” if they are discovered drunk or try to leave the ranks.
The last evaluation of the British Ministry of Defensereleased this Sunday, talks about the use of so-called zindanes: holes dug into the ground as cells, where the cautioned soldiers end up locked up with a metal grill over their heads, according to accounts of Russian combat personnel collected by London.
According to British Intelligence, these punishments represent a stark contrast to the attitude displayed by many Russian commanders early in the Russian invasion of the Ukraine. At that time, the military who expressed their desire to return to their homes could do so with the tacit permission of their superiors.
However, since autumn of last year, “there is evidence of multiple initiatives, increasingly draconian, to improve troop discipline”, according to the evaluation published on the Ministry’s Twitter account and particularly since the head of the Army General Staff russian general Valery Gerasimovassumed command of the operation in January of this year.
Gerasimov, who was already a relevant figure within the organization chart of the Armed Forces, replaced in the post Sergei Surovikinappointed in November 2022, in a decision taken in part to boost Russian advances ahead of the winter campaign.

For his part, Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky stated this Saturday that each and every one of the Russian military are “terrorists and murderers”” and that they will all be “punished”.
“Not only those who give the orders, but all of you are terrorists and murderers and you must all be punished.. Obviously it will be those who committed the original crime, from which all the others derive, the crime of aggression against our people, against our state, ”Zelensky said in his usual evening speech.
The Ukrainian president has referred in particular to the attack on a residential building of the uman city in which they have died 23 people, six of them children. “Whoever prepared these missile attacks must know that they are an accessory to these murders.. Whoever guides and launches the missiles, whoever pilots planes and governs ships for terrorism ”, she underlined.
Zelensky highlighted international support for the Ukrainian military forces. “For Ukraine and for the world it is not enough that Russia is weak, as it is already happening. You must fully answer for everything you have done”, he pointed out.
In addition, he announced that they are preparing more sanctions against individuals and companies “in the terrorist defense industry” and against “foreign entities that help Russia to prolong its aggression.”
As usual, Zelensky closed his speech by mentioning various Ukrainian military units for their work. “Together we are getting closer to the moment of the verdict against the evil State. We are close to our victoryto (…). Glory to Ukraine! ”, she concluded.
