He ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenskyhas commissioned study an electronic request with more than 25,000 supporting signatures suggesting officially change the name of “Russia” to “Muscovy” and replace the terms “Russian” with “Muscovite” and “Russian Federation” with “Moscow Federation”.
The author of the petition maintains that “The historical name of Russia is Muscovy”as reported today by the agency united.
“This name was used in European languages and in some Asian ones. This name also appears on many historical maps from the 16th to the 19th centuries, which were made in Europe before and after the name change from the Kingdom of Moscow to the All-Russian Empire,” the petition states.
The author also points out that “Russia has existed for only 301 yearssince October 22, 1721, when Tsar Peter I of Moscow proclaimed the Muscovite kingdom ‘Russian Empire’”.
Zelensky indicated that “the issue raised in the petition requires a comprehensive reviewboth at the level of the historical and cultural context and taking into account the possible international legal consequences”.
The Ukrainian president added that he has commissioned his prime minister, Denys Shmyhalresolve this issue together with scientific institutions.
The idea of changing the name of the Russian Federation to Muscovy is not new in Ukraine. Already in 2019, Nikita PoturaevZelensky’s political adviser, made a proposal along these lines and later, the journalist Ayder Muzhdabayev stated that changing the name of Russia to Muscovy would have historical grounds.
Moscow’s response was swift and the former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev reacted wryly to Zelensky’s proposal.
Medvedev advised to change the name of Ukraine to “Reich of pigs, followers of Ukrainian nationalist and Nazi collaborationist Stepan Bandera”.

“The Nazi supremo in kyiv commissioned to study the issue of changing the name of Russia to Muscovy. Well, what to say… Our answer? Of course not jojliándia (pejorative nickname of the Ukrainians). And much less Malorrossiya. Only Schweinisch Flag-Reich (Reich of pigs followers of Bandera)”, he wrote on Telegram.
Bandera led a nationalist movement during World War II that was behind the murder of some 100,000 non-Ukrainian civilians in Volhynia and collaborated with the occupying forces of Nazi Germany, for which he is hated in both Poland and Russia.
The former Russian president, known for his profane political comments, was joined by the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zajárova: “Zelensky every day shows that we are right”. “Here is a new attempt to turn Ukraine into an ‘anti-Russia’,” she wrote on her Telegram channel.

Recently, Medvedevpromised that the Russian Army will “welcome” with Kalibr missiles and “other fireworks” to the possible German tank factory in Ukraine.
“That event will be celebrated with Kalibr fireworks and other pyrotechnics.”, Medvedev wrote on Telegram.
He considered that the news about the plans to build the plant reminds for the moment “a primitive trolling of the kyiv regime”.
The former Russian president made these statements after it became known that the German arms company Rheinmetall is negotiating the construction of a tank factory in Ukraine capable of producing about 400 tanks of the “Panther” type each year.
