Costa Rica expressed its concern about the measures of the Nicaraguan dictatorship on the stripping of citizenship from more than 300 opponentsurging the Daniel Ortega regime to guarantee the right to nationality.

He Ministry of Foreign Affairs Costa Rican made a call to Managua so that complies “with its international obligations to guarantee the right to nationality and to take measures for the prevention and eradication of statelessness”.

“For Costa Rica, which maintains (a) strong presence in international Human Rights forums, The situation in the sister country contradicts the obligations that every state has within the framework of International Lawwhich prohibits the arbitrary deprivation of nationality for racial, ethnic, religious or political reasons”, declared Vice Minister Christian Guillermet-Fernández.

The Foreign Ministry remained in line with what was stated by United Nations and other multilateral organizations, which recall that deprivation of citizenship contravenes the Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons of 1954 and the 1961 Convention for the Reduction of Statelessness, to which Nicaragua is a party.

The Nicaraguan dictatorship withdrew the nationality of 94 citizens last week, including journalists, activists, politicians, religious or human rights defenders, declared “fugitives from Justice.”

This action took place after Nicaragua deported to the United States 222 prisonerswhom he also left stateless, elevating to 316 Nicaraguans who have lost their citizenship in less than seven days.

Until now, Latin American governments they have not unanimously condemned the case of the 317 stateless Nicaraguanswith the exception of Chili.

Colombia and Mexico have reacted cautiously, while Brazil and Argentina they have been silent.

In this sense, the NGO save democracy urged the rest of the Latin American democracies to support the struggle of the political prisoners and called on them “to express themselves forcefully against these totalitarian actionsand jointly provide I support citizens who have been stripped of their nationality and private property.”

In a statement, the agency also expressed “its deepest repudiation of the systematic and increasingly frequent violation of human rights in Nicaraguaincluding the illegitimate deprivation of liberty and the flagrant violation of the right to nationality and private property of numerous Nicaraguans for attempting to exercise freedom of expression, freedom of association and other universal political and social rights”.

“The recent legislative reforms adopted by Daniel Ortega contravene international law in particular the Convention on the Status of Stateless Persons, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the American Declaration on Human Rights. In this very serious socio-political context, the Daniel Ortega regime continues to repress any attempt at a democratic revival”, highlighted Save Democracy.
