He number of people employed in Germany rose in the fourth quarter of last year to 45.9 millionwhich means a new all-time highaccording to provisional data released today by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
Between July and September 2022, it had already been exceeded with 45.6 million employees in 106,000 people or a 0.2% the previous peak of the fourth quarter of 2019.
In year-on-year terms, the number of people with a job rose between October and December 2022 by 492,000 or one 1.1 percent.
Thus, the year-on-year increase in employment maintains the pace of the previous quarter, when the number of employees grew by 514,000 or 1.1 percent.

In seasonally adjusted terms, the number of employees increased by 0.2% -in 107,000– in the fourth quarter compared to the three previous months, when the increase was still somewhat weaker -at 38,000 or 0.1%-.
Without removing seasonal effects, the employed population increased in the fourth quarter even in 258,000 people or 0.6% regarding the third.
An increase in the number of employed in the fourth quarter of a year compared to the three previous months is common.
However, the increase in 2022 was higher than the average of the three years prior to the pandemic crisis -between 2017 and 2019- of 217,000 people or a 0.5 percent.
The positive evolution of employment subject to contributions contributed significantly to this increase in 1.1% year-on-year in the fourth trimester.
There were also slight employment increases in the number of people with marginal wages, short-term or minimum-paid job opportunities for the long-term unemployed for integration into the labor market.
By contrast, the number of self-employed workers continued to decline.
Thus, the number of paid employees rose in the fourth quarter in 529,000 people or 1.3% YoY to 42.0 million, while the number of self-employed workers fell by 37,000 or 0.9% to 3.9 million.
