The environmental activist Greta Thunberg and hundreds of protesters blocked access to the Norwegian Ministry of Energy on Monday to protest against building wind turbines on land traditionally used by indigenous herders reindeer sami
Thunberg, a strong advocate of ending the world’s reliance on carbon-based energy, said the transition to green energy cannot come at the expense of indigenous rights.
“Indigenous rights, human rights, must go hand in hand with climate protection and climate action. That can’t happen at the expense of some people. So not climate justice”, Thunberg told the news agency Reuters sitting in front of the main entrance of the ministry, where she had chained herself along with other protesters.
The Norwegian Supreme Court ruled in 2021 that two wind farms built in Fosen, in the center of the country, violated the rights of the Sami under international conventions, but the turbines are still operating more than 16 months later.
Police evacuated a side entrance to the government building complex that houses the Ministry of Energy in the afternoon, taking some protesters away.
“Right now I feel very, very convinced that Fosen Sami must get their rightsI feel it very strongly and there are many emotions,” he told Reuters one of the protesters, who identified herself as Joni, after being evicted.
Reindeer herders in the Nordic country say the sight and sound of the giant wind turbines scare their animals and upset ancient traditions.

“We are here to demand that the turbines be demolished and that legal rights be respected,” said the Sámi singer-songwriter, actress and activist. Ella Marie Haetta Isaksen.
The Minister of Energy, Terje Aaslandstated this morning that despite the fact that the Supreme Court has established unequivocally that the permits to build the Fosen park did not have a valid license, the court did not rule on what action should be taken accordingly.
“We must obtain new information on the situation of the reindeer herding industry and look for mitigating measures and then make new decisions in line with the premises of the Supreme Court ruling,” he told the Norwegian channel. NRK.
