Hair dyes? Not in summer

When dyed hair is worn, doubts about how to keep hair hydrated and shiny assail our heads.

To wear hats or not, bathe in the sea or pool, change or maintain the color? They are some of the most frequent questions, and for all of them there are answers.

The first thing to be clear about is that it is not advisable to dye in the middle of summer because the cuticle is already attacked by the sun.

It is better to do it in spring and to distance one dye from another for four or five weeks, if possible, explains the member of Dermopharmacy of the Official College of Pharmacists of Tarragona (COFT), Dolors Andreu.

The negative effects of summer are more noticeable in the structure of dyed hair, because after a color treatment, a dye, a perm or the application of reflections, the hair is at its most vulnerable point.

To prevent the hair from being hit by the sun, Andreu considers that it is important to use creams that carry photo protection and increase the frequency of washing with a shampoo suitable for the type of hair to help remove traces of chlorine and salt. of the water.

Also, if you want to change color, there is the option of putting a vegetable coloring, which, according to the expert, “does not damage the hair cuticle so much and is more advisable”.

But it must be taken into account that “solar radiation degrades hair color, both natural and dyed, and this is important when choosing the color.

It is better to raise the color of the tint one tone ”, reinforces the vocal of Dermofarmacia. In addition to these cares, putting prevention mechanisms into practice is the best way to keep hair healthy, be it dry or greasy.

It is not the same and each type of hair needs different care. More in the summer, when “you have to take it into account when choosing hair products. You always need extra hydration ”, he adds.

Regarding the limit of application of the creams, the medical director of the Insparya clinic, Javier Pedraz, warns: “They can be used normally as many times as necessary, but it is important to bear in mind that if it is used too much it can cause fat in hair”.

Beach or pool?

The effects are less strong when you choose the beach instead of the pool, since the chlorine that the pool carries is much more damaging to the hair, it even causes a color change in the case of blondes.

“Sea water is more advisable for the scalp. But, in both cases, when getting out of the water, you have to rinse your hair and skin, in general, with shower water and try not to dry your hair in direct sunlight.

It is essential to use hair conditioners and masks, rich in nutritious vegetable oils such as sesame, avocado or shea ”, says Andreu.

Also after each swim in the pool or in the sea, Pedraz recommends that “you dry your hair with a towel to avoid it being wet for a long time or leaving traces of sand (in the case of the beach) that can further damage the hair”.
