the intense international mobilization to defend human rights in Ukraine since the Russian invasion should be “replicated” in other countries where these rights are violated, advocated the NGO Human Rights Watchwhich published its annual report on Thursday.
In this more than 700 page report, HRW documents the “litany of abuses” committed in 2022 in the world, since China a Afghanistangoing by Iran, Ethiopia and, of course, Ukraine.
“In the fog of war and the darkness that this war has plunged Ukraine into, there is a light that has been turned on: it is the international response and the commitment to international justice,” he declared. Tirana Hassanits acting CEO, in an interview with AFP.
Although the NGO found “abuses by all parties” in the conflict, Russian forces were responsible for an overabundance of violations, especially against the civilian population.

In this context, HRW welcomes the speed with which the International Criminal Court (CPI) to investigate and with which the European Union, United States, United Kingdom and other governments imposed sanctions on Russia.
“We have never seen in history (…) such a coordinated international response” and “what we have to do now is to ensure that states are held to account at the same level that has been seen in Ukraine, in all other situations” of human rights violations, he added.
In its report, HRW thus urges governments to “replicate the best of the international response in Ukraine” and “broaden the political will to address other crises.”

Hassan calls on the international community to “keep pressing” to hold accountable for abuses in the Ethiopian region of Tigray after the peace agreement reached in November.
The same is true in China, where Beijing has yet to be held accountable for its policy towards the Uyghur Muslim minoritydespite a report by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights concluding that some of the regime’s actions could constitute crimes against humanity.
Or in Iran, where the regime is intensifying its massive crackdown on protests. “We cannot expect the Iranian people to change on their own” the human rights situation in the country, Hassan insisted.

“Significant change against such a powerful regime requires the mobilization of the international community,” he added.
In its report, the NGO denounced the “double standards” that are often applied to human rights violations committed in the world.
