He Pope Francisco asked today in the first act of his trip to Hungarywhere it will remain until Sunday, which Europe deals with the migration crisis “without excuses or delays” because “the consequences sooner or later will affect everyone”.
Francis addressed the issue of migration in his first speech after meeting at the Sandor Palace, seat of the presidency, with the Hungarian president, Katalin Novakand the prime minister Viktor Orbanwhich, although it has welcomed hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees, maintains a hard-fisted policy against migration from other countries that arrive at its borders via the Balkan route.
“I recommend you to welcome strangers and honor them so that they would rather be with you than somewhere else”, reminded the Hungarian authorities of the words of Saint Stephen, King of Hungary and who introduced Christianity to the country.

The pope dedicated the last part of his speech delivered in the former Carmelite monastery, now the seat of government, to the issue of reception, “which gives rise to numerous debates today and is undoubtedly complex” and remarked that “however, the attitude background for Christians cannot be different from that transmitted by Saint Stephen”.
“Thinking of Christ present in so many desperate brothers and sisters who are fleeing conflicts, poverty and climate change, we need to face the problem without excuses or delays,” he asserted.
And he added from the heart of Europe: “It is an issue that we must face together as a community because in the context in which we live, the consequences sooner or later will affect everyone”.

“That is why it is urgent, like Europe, to work for safe and legal paths, with shared mechanisms in the face of an age challenge that cannot be stopped by rejecting it, but must be embraced to prepare a future that, if we do not do it together, will not come” , he claimed.
And he stressed that this should be done above all who “follow Jesus” in a clear message to Orbán, who has always defined himself as a defender of Christian values.
The Pope will meet tomorrow in the Church of Santa Isabel with a group of Ukrainian migrants but also from Africa and Asia.
