Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi met with dictator Bashar al Assad in Syria

The Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisi, met on Wednesday in Damascus with the Syrian dictator, Bashar al-Assadin an attempt to promote cooperation between both allies and to celebrate the “victory” of the regime in the civil war that has ravaged the country for 12 years and in which Tehran has been an important ally.

Tehran has been one of the main supporters of the Assad regime ever since an uprising turned into a war fully fledged in March 2011 and has played a decisive role when tipping the scales in your favor.

the persian regime has sent dozens of military advisers and thousands of combatants supported by Iran from across the Middle East to fight on Assad’s side. With the help of Russia and IranSyrian government forces have controlled large parts of the country in recent years.

In an interview with the pan-Arab television channel Al Mayadeen, Raisi appealed to the reconstruction since the refugees who fled the war return to the country.

“The Syrian government and people have gone through great difficulties,” Raisi told Assad during the meeting, according to Syrian state media. “Today we can say that they have overcome all these problems and they have achieved victory despite the threats and sanctions imposed on them”.

Raisi also plans to visit the shrines of Sayida Zeinab and Sayida Ruqayyaboth holy sites of Shiite Islam, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiera monument dedicated to Syrian soldiers killed in combat.

The last Iranian president to visit Syria was President Mahmud Ahmadinejad in 2010.

The Iranian president’s visit comes as some Arab countries, including regional powers Egypt and Saudi Arabia, have been opening up to Assad and his foreign ministers have visited Damascus in recent weeks. The Syrian foreign minister also visited the Saudi capital, Riyadhin April, the first visit of its kind since the two countries cut ties in 2012.

In March, Iran and Saudi Arabiaone of the main supporters of the Syrian opposition fighters, reached an agreement in China to reestablish diplomatic relations and reopen embassies after seven years of tensions.

It is likely that the reconciliation between Iran and Saudi Arabia have positive effects on the States of the region where both countries waged proxy wars, including Syria.

Arab governments widely rejected Syria for the Assad’s brutal crackdown on protesters and the break in relations culminated in the expulsion of Syria from the Arab League in 2011. Since then, the conflict has killed nearly half a million people and has displaced half of Syria’s pre-war population of 23 million.

“The United States and its allies failed on all fronts against the resistance and were unable to achieve any of their goals,” Iran’s new ambassador to Syria said on Tuesday. Hossein Akbarito the Iranian state news agency.

The Iranian president’s visit also comes a week after his Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Mehrdad Bazrpashmet Assad in Damascus, where he delivered a message from the Iranian president supporting the expansion of economic relations between the two countries, according to the Iranian state news agency.

The Iranian military presence in Syria has been a matter of great concern to Israel., which has vowed to stop Iranian entrenchment along its northern border. Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes against targets in government-controlled areas of Syria in recent years, but rarely acknowledges them. Since the beginning of 2023, Syrian authorities have blamed Israel for a dozen attacks on Syrian territory, the latest of which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday and knocked out the international airport in the northern city of Aleppo.
