The Israeli army attacked on Thursday targets of the Hamas terrorist group in the Gaza Strip in response to the launch of projectiles towards their territory, in a new day of tension that included the firing of 36 rockets from Lebanon to Israel.
An Israeli military spokesman confirmed that its troops attacked targets in Gaza, while no retaliatory attack on Lebanese territory has been announced so far.
“The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) attacked two terrorist tunnels and two weapons manufacturing sites belonging to the terrorist organization Hamas,” the Army said in a statement, in which it explained that “the attack was carried out in response to security violations by Hamas in recent days.”
“The IDF holds the terrorist organization Hamas responsible for all terrorist activities emanating from the Gaza Strip and will face the consequences of security violations against Israel,” the military spokesman added.
According to the Army, both the projectiles launched this Thursday from the Strip and those fired from Lebanon were the responsibility of Palestinian groups.in the context of an upsurge in violence triggered by clashes on Wednesday between Israeli policemen and Muslim faithful in the Esplanade of the Mosques in occupied east Jerusalem.
Palestinian security sources in Gaza pointed out that the Israeli “intense bombardments” on the Strip were carried out with fighter planes. In addition, they specified that explosions were recorded in the north, south and east areas of the enclave.
Medical personnel in Gaza confirmed that so far No injuries have been reported product of these attacks while witnesses described “large columns of black and gray smoke.”
The Chamber of Joint Military Operations, comprising the armed wings of Palestinian factions, including the Islamist movement Hamas and Islamic Jihadwarned that its militiamen “are ready to face any Israeli attack.”
“In light of the enemy’s threats to our resistance and to our people in Gaza, we affirm our readiness to confront and respond with full force to any aggression and defend our people,” the Palestinian group said in a statement.
These episodes follow a long day of violence in the region, beginning at dawn with the launch of seven surface-to-air rockets by militias in Gaza, after launching 11 rockets the day before.
Later, the Israeli Army reported the firing of 34 rockets from Lebanon towards its territory, followed by two more shots towards the border community of Metula and in what represented the largest attack from Lebanon on Israel since 2006.
Although Israel blamed Palestinian groups in Lebanon for these shots, an Army spokesman denounced that the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah “I was aware because they control everything that happens in southern Lebanon.”
