“My goal was to say that it is urgent to raise this issue. I did it. It was urgent to discuss it in depth (…), it is urgent to solve it. We can do it,” Macron said, before remarking that this state visit has had “many positive results”.
The French president asserted that the “main interest” is to protect the middle classes, both in Paris and in Washington, as well as dealing with China on a commercial level. “But the result of the recent decision (the IRA law) on this push, he would say, is bad for Europe,” he added.
“I think that if the day after the conflict the result is to have a weaker europe since a large part of their industry would have been simply killed, that will not be in the interest of the American administration or society, ”he criticized.
Macron and Biden met last week at the first official visit to Washington of a foreign president since the start of the COVID-19 restrictions.
The visit started with an official reception at the White House in a meeting in which the two leaders wanted to claim themselves as allies in a global context marked by challenges from other powers such as Moscow either Beijing.
On December 1, Macron criticized the massive subsidies promoted by the US and called for more economic coordination between both parties.
The massive subsidies included by Biden in an economic and social law called Inflation Reduction Law (IRA for its acronym in English) are “super aggressive for our companies,” claimed the French president.
“I don’t want to become a market for American products because I have exactly the same products as you. I have a middle class (that must) work and people that must find work. And the consequence of the IRA is that they may solve their problem, but they will make mine worse,” he said.
“Put yourself in my place,” he told them during this meeting dedicated to climate change and in which asked “to be respected as a good friend”.
France frowns on the economic protectionism of the Democratic president, who follows the motto “Made in USA” (Made in the USA).
Later, in a speech given at the embassy of France in WashingtonMacron insisted that the investment and grant program of the United States to help their companies can be a flash point in the US relations with Europe.
While expressing his support for the IRA’s environmental goals, Macron assured that “These are decisions that will divide the West”, pointing to the US legislators that “what has happened in recent months has been a challenge” for France.
Biden intends to boost, among others, the sector of the electric vehicles to promote industrial employment, the energy transition and technological competition with China.
