One of the fighters violated the airspace in the southwest of the island, which forced the Taiwanese Armed Forces responded with the deployment of aircraft, boats and land missile systems, as they posted on their Twitter account.

This Friday, the Taiwan Ministry of Defense denounced that two reconnaissance drones of the People’s Liberation Army they flew over the island “for the first time” shortly after reporting that nearly twenty Chinese Army planes had entered their airspace.

Faced with the escalation of tensions, the head of the diplomacy of the European Union, Josep Borrellasked the member countries of the bloc to get involved in the conflict between Taiwan and China and urged them to patrol the strait with their naval forces.

Europe must be “very present in this dossier that concerns us economically, commercially and technologically. That is why I urge European navies to patrol the Taiwan Strait to show Europe’s attachment to freedom of navigation in this absolutely crucial area”, wrote Borrell in the French newspaper Journal du Dimanche.

Last Tuesday, during the opening of a debate focused on China in the European Parliament, Borrell assured that Taiwan and this conflict are “crucial for Europe” since “the most strategic strait in the world is at stake, especially in terms of trade”.

“We must be present there through freedom of navigation operations”added Borrell, while assuring that Taipei “is absolutely part of our strategic perimeter to guarantee peace, to defend our interests”.

Borrell’s position can be understood, in turn, as a subtle response to the controversial statements that, weeks ago, the French president issued, Emmanuel Macronduring a trip to China.

In the midst of his three-day visit to Beijing, which drew attention for its optimistic tone in the context of Russian hostilities in Ukraine and the ambiguous position adopted by Xi Jinping, the French official considered that the conflict over Taiwan is external to Europe.

“The question that we Europeans ask ourselves is the following: Are we interested in speeding up when it comes to Taiwan? No. The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans should become followers on this issue and keep up with the United States and an overreaction from China.”, he said then.

Thus, Macron explained his fear that the continent would be left “trapped in crises that are not ours, which prevents it from building strategic autonomy” and what puts it at risk of becoming a “vassal” of Washington.

The escalation of tensions in the region began with the trip to the island of the then president of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, in August of last year.

The situation worsened after the visit of the president of Taiwan, Tsai Ing Wento the US where he met several US congressmen despite warnings from Beijing.

Taiwan has had an independent government since 1949, but China considers the territory under its sovereignty.

The Chinese government’s fundamental policy towards Taiwan has so far been one of peaceful reunification under the “one country, two systems” principle.
