NY will continue to facilitate medical abortionsaid the governor Kathy Hochul after hearing today’s decision from a federal judge of Texas that revoked approval of abortion pill mifepristone Nacional level.

Hochul claimed to be “horrified” for ruling against the use of a drug that is “safe and effective” and which he said has been used by more than five million women since its use was approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) more than two decades ago.

“Regardless of today’s ruling, abortion access and care is still available in New York. Anyone in need of care, our state will welcome with open arms.”, he said in a statement.

The Democratic governor further indicated that she asked the legislature to consider actions to protect abortion with other medications, including misoprostolduring the budget negotiations.

federal judge Matthew Kacsmaryk ordered today to be void the approval that the FDA gave the drug in 2000. Federal lawyers representing the FDA are expected to appeal quickly.

In its decision, it alleges that the federal agency violated proper procedure in approving mifepristone and failed to take into account the drug’s “negative impact” on the health of people who take it.

The ruling, however, gives the legal representatives of the government of Joe Biden a period of one week to appeal the decision.

For his part, the mayor of the city, Eric Adamsconsiders that it is a “cruel and inhumane” decision of a court “bent on trampling the law, not upholding it.”

“Today’s ruling by another person appointed by (the former president) donald trump could make it even more difficult for people to access an abortion, even here in New York City, and it’s a clear act of war against women“, he claimed.

He assured that his administration “will fight to stop efforts to control women’s bodies, their choices and their freedoms” and that if the decision prevails, public hospitals will continue to make abortion accessible by switching to a misoprostol treatment regimen to comply with the law.

Clinics and doctors who prescribe the two-drug combination have said that if mifepristone were withdrawn from the market, they would switch to using only the second drug, misoprostol. That single-drug approach has a slightly lower effectiveness rate for terminating pregnancies, but is widely used in countries where mifepristone is illegal or unavailable.

Mifepristone is part of a two-drug regimen that has long been the standard for medical abortion in the US. The clinics and doctors who prescribe the combination say they plan to switch to using only misoprostol. The single drug approach is slightly less effective in terminating pregnancies.

The lawsuit was brought by Alliance Defending Freedom, which was also involved in the Mississippi case that led to the annulment of Roe v. Wade. At the core of the lawsuit is the allegation that the FDA’s initial approval of mifepristone was flawed because it did not adequately review its safety risks.

Courts have long delegated to the FDA on questions of drug safety and efficacy. But the agency’s authority faces new challenges in a post-war legal environment. gnaws in which abortions are prohibited or not available in 14 states, while 16 states have laws that specifically target abortion medications.
