The German Chancellor, Olaf Schölzarrived at the India this saturday for deepen bilateral trade relationsas well as making progress on defense matters, on a two-day official visit during which the Russian invasion of Ukraine will be a major point in his meeting with the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi received German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in a ceremonial welcome at the (presidential palace) Rashtrapati Bhawan. The visit of Chancellor Scholz is one oopportunity to further deepen the multi-faceted strategic partnership between India and GermanyIndian Foreign Affairs Spokesman Arindam Bagchi said on Twitter.
In Scholz’s first visit to India since taking over as chancellor, the German leader is scheduled to exchange a series of memoranda of understanding focused on bilateral trade.
The German ambassador in India, Philipp Ackermanaffirmed, in a press conference prior to the arrival of Scholz, that the chancellor is accompanied by a delegation of high-level businessmen, including leaders of the technological and industrial group siemens and the software manufacturer SAP.
“We look forward to the signing of many bilateral agreements between German and Indian firms,” Ackermann said.

The search for a free trade agreement between the European Union and India and greater defense cooperation between the Asian country and Germany, as well as greater collaboration between the two countries in the field of renewable and green energy, will also be part of the discussions.
The conflict of Ukrainea year after the Russian invasion, is also high on Scholz’s agenda.
In this regard, Scholz stated that he hopes that India “do what is necessary” as host of the G20 for push forward a clear condemnation of the war in Ukrainea year after the Russian invasion, and managed to promote measures to limit the impact on the most vulnerable countries during the group’s finance meeting.
“Regarding joint decision-making in the G20, I am glad that India is holding the G20 presidency. This year we must underline a very difficult point but I am confident that India will fully comply with what needs to be done about it”, said Scholz from New Delhi, in an act in which he was accompanied by Modi.

In this context, the German Chancellor stressed the importance of “ensuring that countries in Asia, Africa and the Americas are not negatively impacted too strongly by the terrible war of aggression that Russia launched against Ukraine.”
Scholz pointed out that the war “violates the fundamental principles” of the international community, mainly the one that prevents changing the borders “using violence”. For this reason, he pointed out the importance of “declaring very clearly where we stand on this matter” before the United Nations.
The German chancellor met with Modi today, before the two exchange memorandums of understanding, and is scheduled to meet with the Indian president, Droupadi Murmuas well as with businessmen.
Scholz will leave tomorrow for the southern city of bangalorehe Technological heart of India and where the meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors is currently taking place, between the scrutiny of the Asian country for its neutral position in the face of the conflict in Ukraine and New Delhi’s ambition to be the leading voice of the global south.
Last December, the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbockvisited the Asian country with an agenda focused on the transition and development of renewable energy.
