Poland denounced that two Belarusian helicopters violated its airspace: the Army increased the number of soldiers on the border

Two Belarusian helicopters violated Polish airspace

After the arrival of mercenaries from the Wagner group in Belarus, the Polish government has been warning about the threat posed to its country, and the region, by the collaboration that Minsk is providing to Putin’s Russia in the framework of the invasion of Ukraine. This Tuesday, Warsaw denounced that two Belarusian helicopters violated its airspace.

“Today there was a violation of Polish airspace by two Belarusian helicopters that were conducting training near the border. The Belarusian side had previously informed the Polish about the training. The border crossing took place in the Bialowieza area at a very low altitude, which made it difficult for radar systems to detect it.”said the Ministry of Defense in a statement.

Faced with this situation, the Minister of National Defence, Mariusz Blaszczak, ordered “to increase the number of soldiers on the border and allocate additional forces and resources, including combat helicopters.”

The government reported what happened to NATO.

Likewise, the Polish authorities announced that the Belarusian charge d’affaires will be summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs “to explain the incident.”

The Polish Ministry of Defense maintained that in recent times Russia and Belarus “have intensified their hybrid activities against Poland.” “Due to possible new provocations, we ask that information that may be used by the Russian and Belarusian regimes be disseminated and commented responsibly,” the text added.

This incident takes place days after the Polish Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawieckidenounced the presence of a hundred mercenaries from the Russian Wagner paramilitary group near the border with Poland.

The president said the mercenaries had approached the Suwalki Corridor, a strategic stretch of Polish territory located between Belarus and Kaliningrad, a Russian city cut off from the mainland.

Poland, a member of NATO and the European Union (EU), fears for security on its eastern border with Ukraine and Russia’s ally Belarus.

Those fears increased since Wagner mercenaries settled in Belarus after his short-lived rebellion in Russia weeks ago.

The Polish-Belarusian border has been under tension for several years, when large contingents of migrants from the Middle East and Africa arrived there to try to enter the EU through Poland and Lithuania.

The Polish government accuses Russia and Belarus of using migrants to destabilize Poland and other EU countries. It calls migration a form of hybrid warfare and has erected a high wall along part of its border with Belarus.

“The situation becomes even more dangerous (…) This is one more step towards a new hybrid attack on Polish territory,” Morawiecki said.

The arrival of some 3,000 mercenaries in Belarus, their participation in the training of the Belarusian Army and the threats of the dictator Aleksander Lukashenko that those “want to take a walk in Warsaw”caused alarm in Poland and the displacement of military contingents to points near the border.

“We know where they are: they are based somewhere in central Belarus, where they have set up a camp and a training center,” said Deputy Interior Minister Marcin Wasik, referring to the Wagners. “These unscrupulous criminals have come there with a purpose,” he added.
