Pope Francis today called for the cessation of violence and for the path of dialogue to be resumed in Sudan, where clashes have been taking place since April 15 between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (FAR) paramilitary group.
“Unfortunately, the situation in Sudan remains direTherefore, I renew my appeal for the violence to cease as soon as possible and to return to the path of dialogue. I invite everyone to pray for our Sudanese brothers and sisters”, Francis said, leaning out of the window of the pontifical palace during the Regina Coeli prayer, which between Easter Sunday and Pentecost replaces the traditional Angelus.
The pope has already made several calls for an end to the violence in this country that he said “has suffered so much.”
The fighting that began on April 15 between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (FAR) paramilitary group arose after weeks of tension over the reform of the security forces in negotiations to form a new transitional government.
Both forces were the architects of the joint coup that overthrew the transitional government of Sudan in October 2021.
Given the outbreak of the conflict, many countries have decided to evacuate their citizens. According to the count offered this Friday by the World Health Organization (WHO), at least 413 people have died and 3,551 have been injured in Sudan.
travel to hungary
Pope Francis spoke today about his upcoming trip to Hungary, from April 28 to 30and which he described as a visit “to the center of Europe, where the icy winds of war blow”, in reference to Ukraine, which will be one of the issues he will address.
After the Regina Coeli prayer in Saint Peter’s Square, the Pope explained that this trip to the center of Europe also coincides with “the displacement of so many people that puts urgent humanitarian issues on the agenda” and that is that the issue of migration and the harsh migration policy of the Government of Viktor Orban will also be present on this trip.
”Next Friday I will travel to Budapest, Hungary for three days. I will complete the trip made in 2021 for the International Eucharistic Congress. It will also be a trip to the center of Europe, on which the icy winds of war continue to fall, while the displacement of so many people puts urgent humanitarian issues on the agenda.”said.
He greeted “with affection the Hungarian brothers and sisters who are waiting for the visit.” “I know that you are preparing for my visit with so much effort. I sincerely thank you for that and all of you. I ask all of you to accompany me with your prayers on this journey.”he concluded.
Again, he took the opportunity to remember “our Ukrainian brothers and sisters. Still afflicted by this war.”
During his trip to Budapest, Francis will meet with the country’s authorities and will also hold a meeting with refugees, many of them Ukrainian.
