Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives lost 144 seats in the UK municipal election

The conservatives of the prime minister of United Kingdom, Rishi SunakThey faced some dismal results in municipal electionsin which voters punished their party for the political scandals, slow economic growth and high inflationas the first results showed on Friday.

Although ruling parties often struggle in mid-term elections, the results of local councils in England will be the biggest testand possibly the last, of the intention of the voters before the next general electionsscheduled for 2024.

The Conservative Party suffered a net loss of 144 seats in the town councils that were running for re-election, according to the first results. The main opposition party, the laborwhich hopes to win hundreds of seats in the mid-term elections, added 96 seats.

The liberal democrats earned a net profit of 40 seats.

The results will determine the choice of more than 8,000 seats in 230 town councilsresponsible for the daily provision of public services such as garbage collection and schools.

Sunak regretted this Friday the loss of councilors “friends and who work hard” in the municipal by-elections in England but has stressed that his intention is to focus on his government priorities.

“As far as the results are concerned, it is still early, but what I will continue to do is meet people’s priorities: reduce inflation by half, make the economy grow, reduce debt, cut waiting lists (in public services) and stop the arrival of ships (with immigrants through the English Channel)”, stated the conservative leader .
