Russia threatened harsh retaliation against Poland for confiscating a school building from the Russian embassy in Warsaw

Russia threatened Poland with “harsh” reprisals after the confiscation of a building which housed a secondary school for the children of the Russian diplomatic corps.

“The step taken by Warsaw, which steps outside the framework of civilized interstate relations, is so brazen that it will not go without a harsh reaction and consequences for the Polish authorities and interests in Russia. That must be understood by the initiators of such contradictory and provocative adventures,” the Foreign Ministry reported in a statement.

Moscow considers such a seizure as “a new hostile action” by Poland and a “gross violation of the Vienna Convention” on diplomatic relations of 1961.

In addition, it also means “an attack on Russian diplomatic properties in Poland“, Add.

As confirmed by a spokesperson for the Polish Foreign Ministry, lukasz jasinathe confiscation occurs “based on a Court ruling granting the Polish state ownership of this buildingwhich the Russian embassy has illegally occupied for years.”

The spokesman assured that the building does not have any type of diplomatic status and therefore the measure is not affected in any way by the Vienna Convention.

According to Polish public television DVTthe building of which possession was taken this Saturday had been nationalized and handed over to the Soviet authorities in 1945.

The educational center for the children of the diplomatic corps closed temporarily after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Relations between Moscow and Warsaw have deteriorated in recent years, a trend that worsened with the Russian military intervention in Ukraine, a country that Poland has supported with heavy weapons.

Precisely, in March 2022, one month after the start of the fighting, Poland expelled 45 Russian diplomats suspected of espionage.

In the middle of this April, the Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawieckiparaphrased former United States President Ronald Reagan to warn that “The Empire of Evil is Reborn”in a clear allusion to Russia, whom he accuses of threatening not only Ukraine or Europe, but “the entire free world.”

Russian barbarians threaten not only Ukraine. They are threatening all of Europe and the entire free world. This is not a mere incident, nor a coincidence, nor a manic impulse,” Morawiecki said on his Twitter profile, where he accused the Russian president, Vladimir Putinof having built “his empire of evil for 23 years.”

“The new Europe understands this. It’s time now for old Europe to understand too”, expressed the Polish prime minister in his official profile of the social network Twitter, adopting again the American conservative discourse, which refers to the states formerly under Soviet influence as ‘new Europe’.

Morawiecki was visiting the United States, where he met with Vice President Kamala Harris and visited the Lockheed Martin plant, a US company specializing in the aerospace and arms industry and responsible for manufacturing combat aircraft such as the F-16.
