Russia warned this Friday of a break in the diplomatic relations with the United States if he takes more active measures in favor of Ukraine in the context of the war, which is almost two years old.
“Diplomatic relations in themselves, of course, are not some kind of totem that should be worshiped,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Riabkov began by saying about this link that, for some time, “he is in a coma” by Washington’s “erroneous and dangerous” idea that it is necessary to “strategically” defeat his country.
The official pointed out that among the “triggers” of such a scenario are “the confiscation of assets”, a “further military escalation” or the sending of frozen funds to kyiv for reconstruction.
“I’m just saying, to be clear, that we are prepared for any scenario. “The United States should not be under the illusion that Russia is holding on with both hands to diplomatic relations with the country,” she added in that regard.
That is why, he insisted, the Kremlin does not rule out that the relationship goes from the current “almost zero” level to an “official reduction” of the diplomatic presence, or even a “total rupture,” in an attempt to demonstrate to Washington the need to rethink ties in the context of an “increasingly changing” world order and reach agreements as the “only way out.”
For months, both the United States and European partners have been debating the possibility of allocating all the funds confiscated from Russia and its oligarchs – in the form of sanctions for the war offensive – to the reconstruction of Ukraine, which will cost billions of dollars.
Weeks ago, the members of the European Union agreed that Russia should take charge of this task and, even, the president of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that they were working on a proposal to raise this sum through the money that It is already in your possession.
According to data provided by the group, there would be close to USD 223 billion.
Also, the Deputy Minister of Justice of Ukraine, Irina Mudra, added that a tax on this money or investments would be contemplated to obtain a greater benefit since, so far, the estimated sum necessary for the renovation of the country is close to USD 400,000.
In this regard, Kremlin spokesman Dimitri Peskov warned that, if such actions were to take place, there would be “serious consequences” that would affect the global economic situation.
“The issue of illegal seizure of our assets is constantly on the agenda of Europe and the United States. This issue is unacceptable to us, it is extremely dangerous for the global financial system” and Russia “will never leave alone” those who intend to implement these measures, he continued.
“Europeans and Americans understand this perfectly because this will have legal consequences for those who initiate and apply it. If they confiscate something from us, we’ll see what we can confiscate in response. And if it is found, we will naturally do it immediately. Therefore, these are steps that cannot be taken, which have serious consequences,” the spokesperson concluded.
