Speaking for the first time about her breakup with Gerard Piqué, Barcelona’s central defender and world champion with the Spanish team at the World Cup in South Africa, Colombian singer Shakira spoke openly about what that relationship meant.
“Gerard wanted to play football and win titles, and I had to support him. I mean, one of the two had to make a sacrifice, right?” Shakira said in an interview for Elle magazine, in which she also pointed out that after the announcement of the divorce, she feels harassed and worried because the life of their children has been disrupted by the scandal.
“We can’t go to the park as a family,” Shakira lamented.
Describing the dilemma she faced when marrying Piqué, the “Pies descalzos” singer gave an x-ray of what it meant for her career.
“Either he left his contract with Barcelona and moved to the United States with me, where my career is, or I would have to do that in his place. And so, one of the two had to make that effort and that sacrifice. And I did it”.
Among other things, Shakira had to stop doing world tours at the level she was used to because her children needed stability and that would have been impossible if she hadn’t given up traveling.
“I put my career in the background and I came to Spain, to support him so that he could play football and win titles. And it was an act of love. Thanks to that, my children were able to have a mother present, and I have that bond with them. incredible that it is unbreakable and that it sustains us”.
