Social Democrats, Greens and Leftists announced this Monday a agreement to govern the city-state of Berlin that reissues the coalition that governs the German capital since 2016.
The pact, which still must be endorsed by the three parties, provides that the mayor-governor of Berlin will be the Social Democrat Franziska Giffey, who was German Minister of Family between 2018 and May 2021.
As explained by Giffey, who will replace Michael Müller, also a social democrat, The program agreed upon by the three parties aims to achieve a balance between four major areas: Berlin as a socially, ecologically, diverse and economically strong city.
The three coalition partners announced at a press conference that the Social Democratic Party (SPD) will be in charge of the secretariats of Housing, Interior, Economy and Education, while Los Verdes will be responsible for Science and Health, Finance and Environment and Transport.
The leftists of Die Linke will also have three secretariats: Culture, Labor and Social Affairs, as well as Justice and Diversity.
The designated mayor-governor announced that one of the key points of the agreement is the housing issue, pointing out that the partners have committed to build 200,000 new apartments in the next five years.
In addition, they intend to reinforce investment in social housing and bring “all relevant actors” to the table, including real estate agencies and tenant associations, to seek formulas that allow “relax the market” and maintain affordable prices.
In relation to the expropriation of large real estate companies in whose favor 56.3% of Berliners expressed themselves during a consultation held at the same time as the elections on September 27, an initiative to which Giffey opposes, the three partners agreed the creation of a commission of experts.

They will have one year to study all the legal aspects related to the initiative and present their recommendations to the Senate of the city-state of Berlin.
On the other hand, as Giffey explained at the press conference, the pact also involves creating more jobs in education and in the police (2,000 and 700 new jobs a year, respectively).
The red-red-green coalition will also seek to relaunch the economy in times of pandemic and improve the equipment of the citizen service offices in the districts to reduce the bureaucracy characteristic of the capital.
In reference to the fourth wave of the pandemic, the regional leader of Los Verdes Bettina Jarasch pointed out that it is positive that the same government coalition will be reissued, since this will allow a seamless transition process at such a delicate time.

Jarasch added that it is foreseeable that in the near future the 2G and 2G plus regimens will continue to be applied (only vaccinated and cured and only vaccinated and cured with a negative test, respectively) that are already in force in the capital and in other parts of the country.
“We will do everything possible to break the wave, we will fight decisively against the crisis to overcome it as soon as possible,” declared the green policy.
