Spotify plans an audiobook section on the platform

Spotify wants to become the world’s largest audio consumer empire. It all started with an ambitious claim from users that made them invest a lot of resources in podcasting and now it has a new chapter. And it is that the music application has just announced the purchase of one of the largest audiobook platforms in the world, Findaway, with a catalog of more than 325,000 titles.

The agreement, whose figures are not disclosed and which will take effect at the end of 2021, will allow Spotify users to access audiobooks from platforms such as Amazon Audible, Manzana iBooks, Google, Storytel or Scribd, among others.

“Spotify’s ambition is to be the destination for all things audio, for listeners and creators alike. Acquisition of Findaway will accelerate Spotify’s presence in the audiobook space and it will help us to meet that claim more quickly, “explained Gustav Söderström, Director of Research and Development at Spotify.

With the purchase of Findaway, Spotify not only has a large catalog of audiobooks at a time, It also integrates several DTP tools for authors of this type of creations that the platform that you have just acquired has developed in recent years and brings together a service, called Findaway Voices, similar to Amazon with KDP, only in this case for folded books.

What is Findaway

Findaway is a company based in Ohio, United States, with a catalog of more than 325,000 titles, according to their website. The company has partnerships with Apple, Amazon, and other retail heavyweights. Also, design tools for creators.

While it’s not yet clear how Spotify could integrate Findaway’s catalog into its service, the company said in a statement that the deal would help it “Rapidly grow your audiobook catalog” and create new opportunities for authors and publishers.

In addition, Findaway brings together several platforms that offer audiobook services:

– Audioengine: a set of platform tools for integrating audiobook catalogs.

– Audioworks: search for audio production companies.

– Findaway Voices: connects authors with advertisers.

– Orange Sky Audio: expand and diversify the catalog to improve the user experience.

– Playaway: Provides pre-produced audiobooks to schools and libraries.

Nir zicherman, director of Spotify’s audiobooks division, said that the acquisition of Findaway would mean “an expansion of the platform” by expanding the type of content offered to its more than 380 million monthly active users.

Some analysts estimate that the audiobook industry could grow from $ 3.3 billion generated in 2020 to $ 15 billion in 2027, hence the success that the acquisition of Findaway for Spotify could bring. Spotify announced in May that it was allowing access to Storytel audiobooks through this platform.

This audio series is the result of a deep and honest investigation into how Maradona died, which collects never heard before interviews with those who surrounded him the days before his death, a work that was led by Adonde Media and accompanied by Spotify Studios.

This podcast marks the platform’s first simultaneous global launch with six adaptations, each with their own host who will work with the investigation team to tell the story of Diego Maradona in his own words.
