The alleged author of a series of explosive letters sent at the end of last year to the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid and several members of the Spanish governmentincluding the president Pedro Sanchezit was arresteda police source said on Wednesday.

The man, a 74 year old retiree, was arrested in Miranda de Ebro (north), specified this source. One of those letters, addressed to the Ukrainian ambassador in the Spanish capital, provoked him minor hand injuries to a guard at the diplomatic headquarters.

As reported by the Ministry of the Interior, the letter was addressed to the ambassador Serhii Pohoreltsev and was detonated when a staff member, a Ukrainian citizen, tried to open it.

The fact left the man slightly injured for which he was transferred to the Nuestra Señora de América hospital in Hortaleza, where he was treated for his injuries. According to sources close to the Embassy, ​​the injuries were registered in a finger of his right hand.

Given what happened, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jose Manuel Albarescontacted the Ukrainian ambassador in Spain “to ask him about the well-being of the Ukrainian worker who was injured,” according to the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.

Another letter addressed to Pedro Sanchezsimilar to the one that exploded at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid, was intercepted by the authorities, the Interior Ministry revealed.

The “envelope with pyrotechnic material addressed to the president of the government” was “detected and neutralized by security services” from the Moncloa Palace on November 24, according to the ministry statement, which added that it was similar both in appearance and “content” to the one received at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid.

The interception took place after the services of the Security Department of the Presidency of the Government, in the tasks of screening and filtering correspondence, detected a suspicious mailing. It was an envelope addressed to the Prime Minister, who had been sent by ordinary postal mailhas detailed the Ministry of the Interior in a statement.
