Portuguese police officersaccompanied by troops german and british and endowed with high-tech equipment, resumed today the search tasks of evidence on the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in a reservoir in the Algarve, in southern Portugal.
The search is focused on an area of the reservoir of Aradein silvesabout 50 kilometers from Praia da Luzwhere the girl was kidnapped 16 years ago, and a place frequented by the main suspect in the case, the German Christian Brueckner, who, according to local media, had images of the reservoir on his personal computer.
The operative, the largest in recent years on the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, began on Tuesday and, so far, no information has been released on possible progress in the investigation.
The agents, according to local media, have gathered material collected in bags for analysis after combing the area with dogs, georadar and drones.
Sources from the Portuguese Judicial Police told the news agency EFE that they will not divulge information about the operation until there is something new.
Also the German Public Prosecutor’s Office Braunschweig confirmed that “for tactical reasons, no further background information is currently being released.”
The search focused Tuesday on the land area of the reservoir, although the police also have boats and divers.
The area was already searched in 2008 by private investigators without success but, experts in forensic medicine agreed today, advances in technology in recent years are critical to solving the case if evidence of the girl’s disappearance is finally found.
Madeleine was three years old when she disappeared – on May 3, 2007 – from the room where she slept with her little brothers in a tourist complex in Praia da Luz.
After years of investigation, the case took a turn in 2020 and the German Christian Brueckner, imprisoned in his country for other crimes, became the prime suspect.
The German Prosecutor’s Office in Braunschweig is working on the theory that Madeleine was killed by Brueckner, who has a long history of crimes for sexual abuse and pedophiliasome of them in Portugal.
