The escalation of fighting between the regular Sudanese Army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (FAR) today left the center of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, in flames with numerous emblematic buildings burned and affected by explosions and artillery attacks.
Witnesses from the Beri neighborhood, east of the Khartoum International Airport, told EFE that the Clashes took place around the Army headquarters, where both sides used “all types of weapons” and “explosions and intense gunshots were heard.”
”These clashes led to buildings burning in the center of Khartoum,” said a resident, who asked not to be identified.
A military source from the Army told EFE that “the FAR launched cannon fire against the tower where the headquarters and offices of the Nile Company, the largest oil company in the country, are located.”
This building, with glass facades and a pyramid design, which is one of the most emblematic places in the capital and is located in the Al Moqren area, west of the Nile, “It burned almost completely, it was covered in black sheets” due to the flames, detailed this military source, who added that the tower still emits columns of smoke.

Photos spread on social networks showed how other adjacent buildings were also burning in flames, such as the tower of the tax entity, that of the Ministry of Justice and the Standards and Meteorology Authority, to the west of the Army headquarters.
This scenario is a consequence of the fighting that broke out this Saturday between both parties around the Army Command, in the center of Khartoum, and the area known as the Center of the capital.
Witnesses told EFE that the FAR “They attacked several targets in the Engineer Armament area in the center of Um Durman” and in response to this action, “the Army’s heavy artillery attacked several FAR positions south of Khartoum”, in the Al Hizam area, the metropolitan belt.
These same testimonies added that “the Army also attacked the Abu Adam area”, in the south of Khartoum, considered a FAR position.
During the battle, the Army used heavy artillery, war aviation and drones, with which they attacked several objectives in the area east of the Nile on Sunday, which became a large battlefield.

The fighting has intensified in the last week in Khartoum, the main stronghold of the Army in Sudan, despite the fact that the military leader, General Abdelfatah al Burhan, has stated on several occasions that his troops have managed to quell the rebellion started by the FAR. .
So far, the conflict has left more than 1,000 and 5,000 dead, according to different statisticswhile it has obliged to more than 5.1 million people displaced in and out of Sudanaccording to the UN, which points out that almost 70% of the people who have had to leave their homes are from Khartoum.
