The foreign policy chief of the European Union on Tuesday criticized China for its support for Russia during the invasion of Ukraine, which he described as a “blatant violation” of Beijing’s commitments to the United Nations.
“You can’t take the side of the aggressor”, said Josep Borrell. “There is a clear expectation that a permanent member of the (UN) Security Council will stand up for the rules-based international order, and China has a moral duty to contribute to a just peace”.
Along with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who is on a trip to Europe, Borrell strongly condemned a country that has been transformed from partner to rival at the international level.
“With Blinken, we have discussed China’s role in supporting Russia’s violation of the United Nations Charter,” he said.
“We have been clear with China. His position on Russia’s atrocities and war crimes will determine the quality of our relations with Beijing.Borell said. He explained that this is the main message that European politicians are conveying to the Xi Jinping regime during his visits, including that of the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, last week.

The foreign policy chief made his remarks just ahead of a visit to China by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron, hoping to stress that China-EU relations will depend on Beijing’s friendship with Moscow.
Macron and von der Leyen had planned to warn China against sending weapons to Russia, in talks with President Xi Jinping on Thursday.
Although Beijing claims to be neutral in the war, Xi’s visit to Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow two weeks ago had all the appearance and speeches of a meeting between trusted friends.
“They agreed on the need not to deploy nuclear weapons abroad,” Borrell said of the meeting in Moscow. “Some days after, Russia deployed tactical weaponstactical nuclear weapons, in Belarus,” he added, referring to an announcement by Putin about plans for such a deployment.
Borell said that He was looking for a change in Beijing’s position so that relations do not deteriorate.
