The high representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrellurged Russia on Thursday to “do not use as an excuse” the alleged drone attack against its president, Vladimir Putinof which he accuses Ukraine, to continue the escalation of the war of aggression against that country.
“We call on Russia not to use this supposed attack as an excuse to continue the escalation of the war,” Borrell told the press upon arrival at a Council of EU Development Ministers, asked about that event.
The head of community diplomacy stated that “what worries us” is that this alleged attack “can be used to justify more recruitment of people, soldiers, more attacks on Ukraine.”
“The most important thing we have to continue to do is support Ukraine militarily, politically and economically. And the best solution for the war, the only solution for the war, is for Russia to stop the attack and withdraw from Ukraine,” he stressed.

Asked for his opinion on what happened, Borrell said that he had “heard the news, I have seen the images and I have listened to the president (Ukrainian, Volodimir) Zelensky”.
“President Zelensky has said very clearly that the Ukrainians are not involved in the attacks, that they are defending the country, but that they are fighting on their territory, that they are not attacking Russian territory,” he explained.
“This is what Zelensky has said and this is what I have to say,” he concluded.
The Ukrainian president denied on Wednesday that his security forces were attempting to assassinate Putin in a drone attack against the Kremlin allegedly perpetrated by kyiv at dawn, as official Moscow spokesmen have assured.
The Russian presidency announced that Ukraine tried to make an attempt on Putin’s life at dawn from Tuesday to Wednesday with two drones that were shot down by Russian anti-aircraft defenses as they headed for their target in the Kremlin.
Zelensky is today in Hague after having participated on Wednesday in Helsinki in a Ukrainian-Nordic summit with the Finnish president and the prime ministers of Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland.
Borrell added that, in today’s council, the community ministers will address, among other issues, how to deal with the reconstruction of Ukraine and what their needs are with a view to the international conference dedicated to this issue that will take place in London in June, he said.
