In Selma, a city whose name has been etched in the history of the US civil rights movement, council members gathered on a sidewalk using their cellphone lights to declare a state of emergency.

In Georgia, a passenger died after a tree fell on the vehicle in which he was traveling during a storm in Jackson, Butts County Coroner Lacey Prue said. In that same county, located southeast of Atlanta, the storm caused a train derailment.
