The first day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on the front pages of European newspapers

Covers of “The Guardian”, “El País”, and “Liberation”

Ukrainian forces battled Russian invaders on three sides Thursday after Moscow launched a land, sea and air assault on the largest attack on a European state since World War IIprompting tens of thousands of people to flee their homes.

Part of Eastern Europe is now a battlefield, and the continent’s media illustrated their front pages on Friday, February 25, highlighting the horror of an event that has the world on edge and that could result in thousands of innocent victims.

“I’m very lucky, I must have a guardian angel,” he says Olena Kurilo, a 53-year-old teacher whose face covered in blood has become an iconic image of the invasion of Ukraine, and who was featured on the cover of at least three media outlets in Europe. Kurilo survived a missile attack in eastern Ukraine this morning.
