The man who this Friday opened the emergency door of a south korean commercial plane Minutes before the flight landed at Daegu International Airport, some 240 kilometers southeast of Seoul, he told police he did so because he felt overwhelmed and wanted to get off as soon as possiblereported local media.
“The subject felt that the flight was taking longer than it should and felt suffocated inside the cabin.”, he declared to the news agency AFP a Daegu police detective.
The passenger, who remains detained, took advantage of the fact that the cabin staff had sat down and fastened their seat belts to prepare for landing, to open the aircraft door to more than 200 meters high.
This caused panic among the occupants of the plane, as shown by videos taken by some passengers and shared on social networks.
In one of the videos it is shown how the wind wildly enters the aircraft, moving the seat backs and ruffling the hair of the passengers who scream in fear.
“It was chaos. People near the gate appeared to have passed out, and flight attendants were calling for in-flight doctors.”, he declared to yonhap a 44 year old passenger.
“I thought the plane was going to explode. I thought I was going to die like this,” she added.
Among the passengers there were a group of teenagers They were on their way to a track meet.
yonhap quoted other passengers as saying that suffered severe ear pain after the door was opened. She said some cabin crew yelled for passengers’ help to prevent the door from opening.
An official of the Ministry of Transport from South Korea told AFP that it was the “first incident of its kind of which they were aware in the history of Korean aviation.
The man initially refused to speak during interrogations but eventually told authorities that lately he had been feeling very stressed after losing his job and that he was suddenly very overwhelmed inside the aircraft.
Once the preliminary interrogation is concluded, the police plan to request a arrest warrantor for man by violate aviation safety lawwhich can carry penalties of up to 10 years in jail in South Korea.
None of the 194 passengers who were on board the plane were injured during the landing but a dozen experienced hyperventilation and nine had to be hospitalized without a serious prognosis.
