A new chinese ambassador arrived this Tuesday at USA and promised to assume the “great responsibility” of managing the “serious challenges” that relations between the two superpowers are going through.

xie feng, a career diplomat with extensive experience in Washington, arrived in New York on Tuesday, the Chinese embassy said in a statement. He replaces Qin Gang, who resigned his post to take over as foreign minister.

Currently, Sino-US relations are in serious difficulties and face serious challengesXie told reporters at the airport, according to the statement.

US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns hosted a “farewell dinner” for Xie before he left, “at a time when we grapple with the ever-challenging US-China relationship,” he said on Twitter. “I look forward to working with him in his new position,” added the US diplomat.

“We want to work with the ambassador-designate and his team,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said during a news conference.

The arrival of the diplomat occurs in a time of tensions between Washington and Beijing. In February, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken postponed a trip to China after the Pentagon shot down what he described as a Chinese spy balloon over US soil. Biden himself recently said during his trip to Japan for the G7 summit that the balloon incident “changed everything”, although he was confident that relations would begin to thaw soon.

According to his official biography, Xie, 59, is from the wealthy province of Jiangsu (east). He was vice foreign minister and the ministry’s representative in Hong Kong.

the new ambassador studied business administration, worked in foreign relations since 1986 and spent a long period in the ministry’s North American affairs office.

He served twice in Washington in the early 2000s and was later ambassador to Indonesia.

Relations between China and the United States have cracked in recent years due to commercial, technological, human rights tensions, the issue of Taiwan’s sovereignty, among others.
