The operator of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines rated today as “Unprecedented” damages suffered simultaneously by three pipes of the two infrastructures that have caused leaks in the Baltic Seaand said it is impossible to predict when they will be restored.
“The damage that occurred simultaneously to three offshore pipeline strands of the Nord Stream system on the same day is unprecedented. Yet it is not possible to estimate the timing of the restoration of the gas transportation infrastructuresaid Switzerland-based Nord Stream AG.
In the night from Sunday to Monday, a leak in one of the two threads of the Nord Stream 2which never came into operation due to Berlin’s blockade of the infrastructure even before the military intervention in Ukraine.
However, the gas infrastructure was filled with gas and must therefore maintain pressure.
The leak was recorded in exclusive economic zone of Denmark southeast of the island of Bornholm, in the Baltic Sea.
The day before, leaks were also observed in both threads of Nord Stream 1 northeast of Bornholm after the operator reported a drop in pressure.
The first Nord Stream, with a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year, is also detained after Russia alleges an oil leak at the only Russian compressor station that was still running.
Moscow affirms that the affected turbine, like the others that are failing, cannot be repaired due to western sanctionswhile the European Union (EU) considers it to be a excuse to “blackmail” Europe with gas as a weapon.
The Danish Directorate General for Energy declared an emergency in the electricity and gas sectors.
“Pipe breakages are rare, so we see reason to increase the level of emergency as a result of the events that occurred on the last day. We want to ensure the meticulous surveillance of critical infrastructure to reinforce the security of supply,” it states in a statement.
The Danish Navy has decreed an order that prohibits navigation within a radius of five miles around the areas of the leaks and, flights, in an area of one kilometer.
