He International Committee of the Red Cross showed a “major concern” for the suffering of civilians in the Ukrainian city of Bakhmutwhere most of the clashes between the Russian and Ukrainian Army have been concentrated in recent months.
“The situation is really difficult here; it’s loud and scary. Yesterday a missile flew over our heads. We are not living, we are surviving,” said Nikolai, a resident of the area, according to a Red Cross report.
The organization urged both sides to respect international humanitarian law so that the aid reaches the civilians who are still in the region and can access it under protection and without risk of being attacked.
Although most of the civilians have already been evacuated, about 10 percent of the population still remains in cities like Konstantinovkawhile 1,500 people and another 800 continue to live in the towns of Chasiv Yar and of Selidoverespectively.
In addition, the Red Cross stated that most are elderly people with disabilities or reduced mobility and some civilians who refuse to leave their homes.
The NGO continues to send numerous trucks with food, water, hygienic material and clothing to combat the cold to an area where the destruction has spared neither houses, schools or hospitals, which makes it impossible for those who have not left their homes to access the most basic services.

The arrival of the Red Cross convoys coincided with a surprise visit to the head of the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky.
In Chasiv Yar and in Selydove the humanitarian organization provided 18 tons of food and 6,000 liters of waterrespectively.
The local authorities hope that the population can resist another month in Selydove and ten more days in Chasiv Yar thanks to these emergency supplies of the Red Cross.
The committee called on the Russian and Ukrainian armies to allow the arrival of humanitarian aid and assistance to the areas hardest hit by the conflict.
The city of Bakhmut, located in the Donetsk region (east) has become in recent months one of the hottest points in the conflict in Ukraine for being the place where Russia has concentrated almost all its efforts in order to take the location.
The Special Operations Forces have indicated that “continue to defend Bakhmut and that “every attempt to advance by the enemy is repelled.”

The group of mercenaries operates in the area Wagnera private strike force linked to the President of Russia, Vladimir Putinwhich has incorporated into its ranks hundreds of prisoners in Russian jails who have been promised amnesty if they enlist.
Control of the city, already totally destroyed by continuous bombardments, has become a priority target for kyiv and Moscowdespite the fact that many analysts consider that its geostrategic importance is relative.
He leader of the self-proclaimed people’s republic of Donetsk, Denis Pushilinstated that the Ukrainian troops continue to offer resistance in the city of Bakhmut and that kyiv does not intend to withdraw them.
