The volcano erupted on Sunday, November 27, for the first time since 1984, ending its longest period of calm in recorded history. It previously erupted in March and April 1984.
Hawaii authorities say the 2022 eruption poses no threat to property, though nasty volcanic gases and fine ash may drift downhill.
Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano on the planet, rising some 4,169 meters (13,679 feet) above the Pacific Ocean and dominating the island of Hawaii, also known as the Big Island.
The Hawaiian Emergency Management Agency He assured on Twitter that the eruption, for the moment, is limited to the area of the volcano’s caldera and does not present any risk to the communities that are located at the base of the mountain.
However, the same agency warned that some shelters have been opened as a precautionary measure.
“About half of Mauna Loa’s recorded eruptions have been confined to the caldera area without posing any danger to nearby populations,” the office explained.
The National Weather Service American assured that a remainder of ash “of less than a quarter of an inch” can accumulate in some parts of the island, for which they recommended that people with respiratory problems not leave their homes so as not to inhale the particles in the air.
The Mauna Loa volcano is located a few kilometers from the Kilaueawhich in 2018 suffered an eruption that destroyed more than 700 homes, forcing several residents to be displaced.
The Mauna loah shot fountains wash up to 60 meters high and generated rivers of molten rock, US geologists reported Tuesday.
Huge clouds of steam and smoke erupted from the volcano that occupies half of the Big Island of the archipelago.
“The tallest sources reach between 30 and 60 meters, but many are a few meters high,” said Monday the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
“There is a gas cloud visible from the sources and lava flows from the erupting fissures, and it is mainly being pushed to the northwest.”
Geologists say people and property in the area under the eruption are not at risk for now.
“The lava flows from the two highest fissures move down the slope but are stopped about 10 kilometers from each other. saddle road (the main road at the foot of the north flank of the mountain)”.
The lava coming out of the third fissure at about 3,000 meters was also far from the road.
Authorities in Hawaii have not issued evacuation orders, despite the fact that the summit area and several roads in the region were closed. Two shelters were opened as a precaution.
