Rescue teams have struggled to cope with the scale of destruction in southern Turkey and northwestern Syria, with the total death toll topping 5,000 on Tuesday morning.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority of Turkey (AFAD) has said that 13,740 search and rescue personnel have been deployed in the earthquake region, but the level of damage is enormous with almost 6,000 buildings destroyed in southern Turkey.

Only in hataimore of 1200 buildings have been destroyed, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said.

Rescue teams from the province complained about a lack of equipment, while people on the highway stopped cars and called for tools to help clear the rubble.

The government declared a “level 4 alarm” after the earthquake, asking for international help, but has not declared a state of emergency that would lead to a massive mobilization of the military.

Rescue teams managed to make contact with a family of four trapped in the rubble.

“We will get them out alive. We are here for that,” a member of the rescue teams was heard saying during a broadcast by the station. CNNTürk.
