USA again condemned the regime belarus and denounced the existence of more than 1,500 political prisoners in the country.
In a note released this Saturday by the State Department, he indicated that “these men and women have been arrested and imprisoned for exercise their human rights and fundamental freedoms for the sake of Belarusian democracyby Pprotest against rigged elections or by oppose Russia’s war against Ukraine” and therefore called for their immediate and unconditional release.
“We reiterate our strong desire to see the immediate and unconditional release of all the political prisoners detained by the regime of Alexander Lukashenko”, he adds.
Washington in turn warned of the irregular judicial processes in which many of them were convicted, since they took place behind closed doors, “far from public scrutiny and accountability.”

These prisoners are incommunicado from their lawyers, families and loved ones – many of whom are not even aware of their whereabouts – and in conditions that may not be appropriate.
Although the identity of all those held by the regime is unknown, the note mentions some names such as Viktar Babarika, Siarhei Tsijanoski, Mikalai Statkevich, Maria Kalesnikava, Maxim Znak, Ales Bialiatski or Ihar Losik.
Just on the eve of Solidarity Day with the Political Prisoners of Belarusthe United States reaffirmed its commitment to “promote the accountability of perpetrators of human rights violations (in the country) and to increase the costs associated with their abuses, including through the imposition of visa restrictions and penalties.”
“We stand with the people of Belarus in their aspirations for a future based on the rule of law, respect for human rights and an accountable and democratically elected government”, they concluded.

The US complaint came weeks after the Belarusian Justice sentenced a former dissident journalist to eight years in prison.
Roman Protasevich he had been arrested in 2021 after the Lukashenko regime considered that he had challenged its power in the massive anti-government protests and what was there conspired with the seizure of command unconstitutionally.
The journalist was accused of inciting hatred and social discord, as well as organizing riots, activities of a terrorist organization, creating an extremist formation and being part of its leadership.

“My sincere wish was change the lives of our people and our country for the better but I was very wrong, I chose the wrong path”, he commented when admitting “openly the political defeat”.
It was “a big mistake” to try to bring about “changes through a divide in society,” he added.
