He Ukrainian Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, announced on Tuesday the recovery of 15 Ukrainian minors who had been deported by Russian forces to areas under the control of Moscow.
“It has been possible to return 15 Ukrainian children to Ukraine, with their mothers and legal guardians”, Lubinets wrote on his Telegram channel, where he also posted photos showing teenagers, with their faces pixelated, at a checkpoint with military personnel.
The commissioner explained that the minors are from the regions of Kharkiv (northeast) and Kherson (south), which were occupied by Russia at the beginning of the war and recovered later -partially in the case of Kherson– by the forces of kyiv.
“Despite all the challenges, We continue to work so that Ukrainians can meet their relatives and meet on their land. Today, according to the National Information Office, 308 children have been returned to Ukrainian territory”Lubinet said.
According to the Ukrainian authorities, some 16,000 cases of minors that they have been transferred to areas under Russian control, although they assure that the number could be much higher.
last week the International Criminal Court (ICC) in Hague issued an arrest warrant against the Russian president, Vladimir Putinand against the Russian Commissioner for the Rights of the Child, Maria Lvova-Belovafor his alleged responsibility in the deportation of Ukrainian childrenwhich would constitute a war crime.
The ICC said its trial chamber found that there were “reasonable grounds to believe that each suspect is responsible for the war crime of illegal deportation of population and illegal transfer of population from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federationto the detriment of Ukrainian children”.
The court, created in 2002 to judge the worst crimes committed in the world, has been investigating for more than a year possible war crimes or crimes against humanity committed in Ukraine during the Russian offensive.
The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khansees as a possibility that the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, face trial for war crimes committed in Ukraineas stated in an interview with the chain CNN.
“Those who believe it is impossible” for the Russian leader to be held accountable for acts committed in Ukraine “do not understand history”, Khan assured in statements to the American media.
The prosecutor cited as examples the nuremberg trials (1954-1946) -for the War crimes in Nazi Germany– and the judicial process for the rwandan genocide.
“They all implicated powerful and imposing individuals and yet ended up in courtKhan added.
The prosecutor also pointed out that, through the arrest warrant against Putin you want to send a clear message: “No one should feel that they can commit genocide or crimes against humanity with impunity.”.

The Russian government described the arrest warrant as “outrageous”“inadmissible” and “legally null”, since Russia is not a party to the Rome Statute of the ICC.
For his part, the President of the United States, Joe Bidenaffirmed that the decision of the International Criminal Court against the Russian president, Vladimir PutinIt is “justified”.
“Well I think it’s justified. But the question is that we don’t recognize it internationally either. But I think it’s a very strong point,” Biden said.
A State Department spokesman said in a statement that “there is no question that Russia is committing war crimes and atrocities (in) Ukraine, and we have been clear that those responsible must be held accountable.”
“This was a decision that the ICC prosecutor reached independently based on the facts before him,” the US spokesman added.
