United States: inflation reached the fees for immigration procedures

Inflation is felt in all aspects of life in which USA and now it has arrived at the immigration service.

Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that it plans increase rates of your services. As always happens in these cases, the agency is obliged to make its proposal by means of a publication in the federal register. A 60-day period is then opened during which the public can express themselves in favor or against the increases; After those two months, the change is made official.

96% of the USCIS operation is supported by immigration fees. The objective of the increase, they said, is to improve their service – which in recent years has registered notable delays – and increase the salaries of employees.

“The new fees would allow USCIS to more fully recover its operating costs, restore and maintain timely processing of cases, and prevent the backlog of cases in the future,” the agency said in a statement.

The new USCIS fees

If approved, the new rates imply:

→ A 19% increase in citizenship procedures for naturalization. The formula N-400 it will cost USD 760; it currently costs USD 640.

→ 33% increase in the procedures for family requests foreigners through the form I-130. The proposal increases the cost of the form from USD 535 to USD 710.

→ 55% increase in the request for provisional unlawful presence waiver, which is what undocumented spouses request to leave the country to apply for a visa. Currently the cost of this procedure is USD 715, and under the proposal it would rise to USD 1,195.

→ 35% increase for permanent residences (Green Cards), using the form I-485which will cost USD 1,540 dollars.

→ 137% increase for adjustment petitions with visas H2A Y H1B (work visas). From USD 480 dollars that cost today, they would cost USD 1,080.

→ 50% increase for the order of work permits. The new cost would be USD 650.

→ Increase of 19% for appeals of cases, starting to cost USD 800.

USCIS had not changed its rates since 2016. In 2020, with the pandemic, immigration requests were drastically reduced, leaving the government department with almost no funds.
