Video: Jeff Bezos’ unmanned rocket crashed after failure after launch

A rocket crashed into Earth shortly after liftoff Monday in the first launch accident for Jeff Bezos’ space travel company.but the capsule carrying the experiments managed to parachute to safety.

There was no one on board the flight Blue Origin, which used the same type of rocket that sends paying customers into space. The rockets are now grounded pending the outcome of an investigation, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The rocket New Shepard He was barely a minute into his flight from West Texas when bright yellow flames shot out around the single engine on the bottom. The pod’s emergency launch abort system activated immediately., lifting the ship above. Several minutes later, the capsule parachuted over the remote desert floor.

The rocket crashed and No injuries or damage were reported. said the FAA, which is in charge of public safety during commercial space launches and landings.

Blue Origin’s launch commentary fell silent as the capsule catapulted off the rocket on Monday morning, finally announcing: “It appears that we have experienced an anomaly with today’s flight. This was not planned.”

“Failure of propeller on today’s unmanned flight. Exhaust system worked as designed,” the Kent, Washington-based company tweeted nearly an hour later.

The company later said the rocket crashed.

The mishap occurred when the rocket was traveling at almost 700 mph (1,126 kph) at an altitude of about 28,000 feet (8,500 meters). No video of the rocket, just the capsule, was shown after the failure. It happened around the point where the rocket is under the maximum amount of pressure, called max-q.

The rocket usually lands upright on the desert floor and is then recycled for future flights.

The webcast showed that the capsule reached a maximum altitude of more than 37,000 feet (11,300 meters). Thirty-six experiments were on board to be exposed to a few minutes of weightlessness. Half were sponsored by NASA, mostly from students.

It was the 23rd flight of the New Shepard program, named after the first American in space, Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard. It was the ninth flight of this particular rocket-capsule, which was dedicated to flight experiments.

Blue Origin’s most recent flight with paying customers was last month; the price of the ticket has not been published. Bezos was on the New Shepard first team last year. In total, Blue Origin has flown 31 people on 10-minute flights, including the actor William Shatner.

The rocket should have been launched nearly two weeks ago, but was grounded until Monday due to bad weather.
